Aging could be defined as a gradual deterioration of our physical and mental processes. As more adults begin to become more health-conscious, we are redefining what it means to grow older. Choosing specific foods which will keep our bodies healthy and our minds sharp will give us the edge that we need to look and feel fantastic as we age.

According to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, writer of his bestselling book, The Wrinkle Cure, protecting and treating aging skin begins with taking a look at what you put into your body.

Eat salmon. This is the strongest food recommendation that Dr. Perricone gives us in his book. Salmon contains vital Omega-3 fatty acids which are vital in promoting normal brain function and protecting aging skin. He believes in this so strongly, that he asks his readers to try eating salmon once a day for a few days before an important engagement, just to see how beautiful their skin can look.

It goes without saying that our skin needs plenty of clean, pure water each day to stay hydrated from within. We often focus on hydrating skin from the outside, which often has little effect. Simply put, hydrated skin is moisturized skin.

When speaking of keeping skin young and healthy looking, one word is all you need to know: Antioxidants.

Antioxidants protect our skin from free radical damage and our bodies from disease. Antioxidants rescue our skin from factors such as environmental pollutants, and damage from the sun and other toxic conditions.

Where can we find high doses of antioxidants that occur naturally in food? Dr. Perricone suggests that when it comes to antioxidant protection, that berries are our best friend.

Dr. Perricone lists blueberries, strawberries and raspberries at the top of the list. However, recently he has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show promoting the Acai Berry and ranks it as the “number one superfood in the world,” due to its extremely high antioxidant content.
